Selling into Germany: what your feed, your shop and your campaigns need
Germany is a big market, but it does not forgive half-finished product data. Get the preparation right and the expensive part of the launch is already behind you.
The pattern repeats itself. A shop in Italy, Poland or the Netherlands adds Germany as a target country in Merchant Center, and then surprisingly little happens. The products are in, the clicks are not — or they cost so much that nothing is left of the margin.
Usually only three things are missing: German product data, reliable shipping and legal information, and a campaign of its own for the country. The fourth point is optional, but it is the cheapest lever you have: Shopping clicks served through a Google CSS partner cost around 20% less.
Why Germany is worth the effort
Germany is Europe's largest e-commerce market and, for many retailers, the first foreign market where real volume builds up. Competition in Shopping is intense at the same time, especially in electronics, fashion and home goods.
- Demand: comparing prices through Google Shopping is standard behaviour for German buyers, not a niche habit.
- Trust decides: delivery time, returns and payment methods get checked before the click.
- Click prices: Germany is one of the more expensive markets. Every percentage point of CPC saving counts for more here than in a small market.
What your feed needs for Germany
The feed is where most market entries get stuck. Google checks per target country whether an offer is complete and free of contradictions — and quietly pauses it if not.
- German titles and descriptions: brand, product type and the key attribute, in real German. Raw machine translation shows immediately in a title and costs click-through rate.
- Price in euros including VAT, exactly as shown on the product page. If the feed price differs, the products disappear.
- Shipping cost and delivery time for Germany, set in Merchant Center or delivered in the feed. Without shipping data no offer runs.
- GTIN/EAN and brand wherever you have them. Without them you lose visibility in the direct product comparison.
- A German landing page with German prices and a German checkout. An English shop behind a German ad title breaks the conversion.
The pages German shoppers expect to find
This is not a marketing topic, it is an approval requirement — and the reason behind many Merchant Center rejections.
- Imprint (Impressum) with full company details, reachable from every page.
- Right of withdrawal and return conditions in German.
- Prices including tax, with shipping costs visible before checkout.
- Payment methods German buyers expect — invoice, PayPal, card.
Campaigns: launch separately, do not bolt Germany on
The most common mistake after the feed: Germany gets added to an existing campaign that already covers other countries. Completely different competitive levels then fight over one budget, and the cheapest market always wins.
- 1A dedicated campaign with Germany as the target country and its own budget.
- 2Start with a manageable selection: bestsellers and high-margin products rather than the full catalogue.
- 3Automate bidding only once you have conversion data from Germany.
- 4Review search terms and impression share after two weeks, then expand.

The CSS advantage pays off especially well in Germany
When your Shopping ads run through a Comparison Shopping Service (CSS), you pay roughly 20% less per click for the same position than you would serving directly through Google Shopping. That comes from how bids are handled in the auction, not from a discount on your budget.
In an expensive market that means more clicks for the same budget, or the same visibility at a lower cost. The switch changes nothing about your campaigns, feed or tracking — only which CSS your Merchant Center account is linked to.
